About Oliver Gill
Oliver Gill is a talented & experienced stonemason from London in the UK.
Education
Oliver attended Lambeth College of Further Education in the stonemasonry workshop, part of the School of Building Crafts. The period of study and working stone (cutting/shaping) was from 1993 - 1996.
“I found college good for getting a grounding in geometry, technical drawing, theory, use of materials, banker work (working stone to template plus line with square, chisels/hammer and saw), and of course working and studying with other apprentice and more advanced stonemasons.” - Oliver Gill
Qualifications

- City & Guilds Advanced Craft - pass. 1995
- City & Guilds/COTAC Diploma in Building Conservation, Restoration and New Work - pass, credit & distinction. 1996
Experience
From 1996 onwards Oliver has journeyed to numerous jobs around Greater London, sometimes working as a subcontractor to Mr. Martin Duncan-Jones, sometimes on his own account. Jobs have been varied, often churches within the RC Diocese of Westminster, subcontracting to building companies for specialist stonemasonry skills on a variety of listed and unlisted properties.
The repairs range from the replacement of a terrace house's formal front steps or the replacement of a church's steps and disabled stone ramp, to the copings on the house parapet or the repair and stabilizing of a church spire.
Between these two points stone windows have had to be repaired/replaced, stone string courses chopped out and new worked or precast stonework fixed in situ. Joints required raking out and new lime-based mortars re-pointed in. Stonework needed cutting back and replaced with stone plant repairs, while some repairs required only stone render repairs.
Stand alone items like stone crosses for churches or fancy copings for a listed building were worked in the workshop and fixed on site.
Typical new work includes a Sanctuary of steps and platform in a church, a garden pavillion and steps and paths in stone, precast and marble or a stone porch and stone water feature.
Some of the project photographs give a better insight into this ongoing work.
